Weekly Jobless Claims Post Surprise Jump, Hit 500,000 - CNBC
"New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly climbed to a nine-month high last week, government data showed on Thursday, yet another setback to the frail economic recovery.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 500,000 in the week ended Aug. 14, the highest since mid-November, the Labor Department said."
One way to judge the economic scene is to drive down a major road. Yesterday I drove east on Rt. 64 here in the western suburbs. Time after time I saw empty stores in mini-malls--Charlestown Mall in St. Charles is a ghost town--lots of empty former "big box" locations--big commercial buildings that used to hold thriving businesses are empty. Things are pretty bad folks and they are not getting better.
